KATHMANDU,  - World football governing body Fifa has said it will continue to probe the corruption allegations on All Nepal Football Association President Ganesh Thapa as one of the most powerful figures in the country’s sports goes on another 90 days of self-exile.
Thapa went on a four-month self-imposed ban on December 3 to ease the probe by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority over alleged financial irregularities amounting to Rs58 million.
After the CIAA put the probe on hold, Thapa’s self-imposed sanction ended on March 3 but he decided to stay out of football for another 90 days with Anfa announcing about his latest decision on Thursday.
Thapa’s self-suspension means that he will not be able to attend the Asian Football Confederation congress on April 30 in Bahrain. Missing the AFC congress will also mean he will no longer remain the vice-president of the regional governing body.
Thapa was elected the AFC vice-president on January 6, 2011. Fifa said Thapa’s replacement at the regional level will be voted for at the April 30 congress in Manama.
“ Ganesh Thapa has agreed not to participate in any football-related activity at national and international level [administrative, sports or any other] for an additional period of 90 days as of 20 March 2015, while the Fifa Ethics Committee completes its review of claims involving alleged misconduct by Anfa officials,” Reuters quoted Fifa as saying.
When contacted by the Post on Friday, Thapa declined to comment on the matter.
Fifa has been probing corruption charges from Thapa’s office bearers following a revolt led by Vice-presidents Karma Chhiring Sherpa and Bijay Narayan Manandhar but the world governing body has not reported any findings.
Fifa had said in October that Anfa had been the subject of an “unsatisfactory” external audit in 2012, when “unappropriated cash movements” were identified. The disgruntled group in Anfa had written to Fifa: “The chaos in the administration of Anfa that has persisted for years under the leadership of Thapa must be brought to an end. We urgently request your kind assistance.”
Thapa has denied any wrongdoing.
Anfa has already suspended the vice-presidents, along with central committee member Pankaj Nembang, from football activities and has asked them to come up with statements in their defence.
